Life Bird # 347 - Cacking Goose
What you think is a Canada Goose is really as many as 15-20 sub-species. A couple of years ago, the higher ups decided to divide out a half-dozen of the sub-species and call them a separate species. They are now called Cackling Goose and are a much smaller size, darker color, different calls and are found in more western areas of Canada and the US. I have seen them every so often over the years but have alway been leery of saying any were definitely the Cackling kind. Even the experts have some disagreement. However, this one has hung around Silver Lake in Rochester all winter and I have had several good looks at it and finally decided that it merited my life list. I have several life lists. Here are the numbers now:
World #347
NA/USA #323
MN #298
Olmsted County #265

These two photos taken with my camera phone yesterday as it tried to beg food from me at my car window.
This photo is of another one that I took a few years ago before they split it off as a separate species. It is next to one of the "Giant Canada Goose" subspecies that we have a lot of around here.

Our storm photos
I guess I better post some photos of the storm too to keep up with the rest. It looks like Bloomington might have the most snow this time with 12". Rochester Airport had 10.7" so far, but it is still snowing lightly. Ben and I took the day off (PossAbilities was essentially closed with no transportation of clients and most staff gone). He slept in until after 10 AM. I slept in till 7:45 AM.
It took from 10 until noon to shovel/snowblow. The snowblower didn't seem to work real well for anything too deep so I shoveled part of the driveway. My neighbor (across the street and down two houses) was snowblowing out the neighbors right across the street and came over to do my my slowplow drift at the end. He had a big snowblower and still had to struggle to get the heavy stuff out. He also widened my opening as it was slowly narrowing. I went out this afternoon and did my deck and cleaned up some more. It looks like we are in a winter wonderland with the snow from last week.
David, how about some photos of your long green grass?

Our Turn for a Snowstorm!
We are getting pounded in Bloomington with quite a snowstorm. These pictures were taken this afternoon. We're told there may be as much as six more inches still to come. Adding that to what we have already from this storm and it would mean over a foot in the last 24 hours. We had about eight inches last weekend, too! The wind is supposed to kick in tonight, so we might have drifts tomorrow. Kevin and Sara are in Chicago for a Student Leadership Conference. We're hoping they don't have too much trouble getting home tomorrow. Katie's college classes were cancelled at noon, which was good because she's in bed with a fever today. Alena was home by 1:00. We're expecting to be able to sleep in tomorrow as most schools will probably cancel again. Anyway, enjoy the beautiful wonderland pictures.
